How should I choose a hammock?

Date Published: 03/05/2012

To make the right choice for a hammock we must come in 4 basic goals.

A)The space that will be used for the hammock or the base that it will be placed (distance)
B)The size of the hammock that we want to buy
C)How to use the hammock
D)The manner of manufacture of the hammock

A)An important factor in choosing a hammock is the place that it will  be used, and this has more to do with the total length of the hammock, but also with the characteristics of the location (indoors, in the countryside, near the sea, etc. ) The total length of the hammock defines most of its requirements. In other words, in general, hammocks are made to be comfortable and there are few hammocks below 3 meters in length and these are usually single. All other hammocks start at 3 meters and reach about 4. 30 meters, depending on their size. But if you want to put the hammock at a particular place, you should know the distance between the 2 points.

If there is a base (wooden or metal) then it is important to know the distance between the two edges of the base and the specifications on kilos this base can afford. Usually metal bases withstand up to 180 kilos, and wooden (in good condition) up to 220 kilos.

B)Once we make sure that the space we will place the hammock is enough (or the basis for the hammock), then we can choose how comfortable we want our hammock to be, or for how many people. At this point, it is important to know how many kilos stands each hammock, which has to do with the way it is manufactured. Generally even the largest hammocks withstand up to 200 kilos, but the traditional Mexican hammocks withstand up to 360 kilos. In reality, however large a hammock is, it is unlikely to be able to sit comfortably over 4 people. It can sit comfortably a family that consists of 2 adults and 2 children

C)An important element in the final selection of a hammock is how it will be used. The size of the hammock does not actually specify the people it can host, but the comfort it can offer. A great hammock gives to him who uses it, the possibility to be covered up with it. Of course, a family hammock can accommodate and cover up 2 people. So in the process of selecting a hammock you should think how you want to use it. Some hammocks are also warmer than others (due to their manufacture) and some others are more difficult to be carried, due to their large volume, especially for those travelling with backpacks or bikes and have limited luggage. In general the hammocks with wood (Spread Bars) are difficult to transport.

D) The manufacturing way of each hammock specifies in a grade its use, without of course prohibiting any other use. The woven hammocks are lighter and easy to carry, have great strength and elasticity, they don’t wear out easily, and even if they get wet, they dry very quickly. It is ideal for use in camping and the sea. However, even the large ones can be a wrap for someone to sleep on them, because of their knitting, you need  to have at least one sheet or a sleeping bag.
On the other hand, hammocks that have the texture of fabric, are ideal for sleep, and are striking in their appearance. However it is difficult to convey them, and can be proved quite warm during the midday. They also have great strength, but have a limit, that should not exceed 200 kilos and are also more easily soiled, because the entire surface is exposed. Of course, between the 2 ends; the hammock that is knit and the hammock with the texture of fabric, there are so many other styles in between that each one can find what suits him best.
